No, I'm not talking about the scary Halloween kind of terrors -- the multitudes of ghosts, zombies, glowing princesses, and caped super heroes that will be combing Thorn Hill this evening. Rather, I'm talking about the kind of terrors that will wrench a peacefully slumbering baby from the depths of sleep to screaming terror in 0.5 seconds. And yet, even though the said baby is screaming in terror and not fully awake, she is aware enough to realize the difference between Dad's and Mom's presence and will not stop screaming until Mom is present. With the boys, these sleep interruptions began closer to 18 months of age and quit somewhere between 3 and 4 years. But Nona is ahead of the game -- she is more in tune with her emotions, and her fears, evidently.
I have always wondered about these "night terrors." I mean, after all, what does an almost 1-year old have to fear? Does she fear the squeeze of the birth canal? Does she fear drowning from the over zealous mammary gland? Does she fear being smothered by the adoring tongue of a dog who last snacked on some savory barn-yard morsel? Does she fear the future
ribbing she will receive from three big brothers simply because she is a girl? Or maybe, just maybe, she is afraid I will call her "Missy Poo Poo" the rest of her life! Really. What has she experienced in her short, lovely life to cause such fear? I wish I knew. Then again, maybe I should be thankful that I don't know. There must be a reason that we don't remember many things from our lives before the age of 3.
At least she doesn't fear many things in her waking hours. Go Nona Go!
