We joke that Herman is our $1000 goat. You see, we "bought" Herman from a lady who owed our Veterinary clinic quite a bit of money. We gave her a very generous credit on her large account. Then she skipped town to the tune of approximately $900. Oh well, at least we got her goat! (He he ;)

But how were we in the market for a goat anyway? Well, that's what a loving husband does when his wife talks of the fond memories she has from her childhood about raising goats. Don't I have a wonderful husband? Yes, he reminds me every time "that darned goat" gets out and prunes my roses or young apple trees or lilac bushes -- you get the picture?

So what kind of goat is Herman anyway? Herman is a Nubian
wether (castrated male goat). Most everyone that sees Herman in person remarks on how big he is --he has really long spindly legs and a big fat round belly. He also has a habit of showing you his lower teeth.

Have you ever taken a close look at the eyes of a goat or sheep? They have oblong irises instead of round irises like you and I. Aren't his eyes pretty?

Goats also have big calluses on their "knees" which is actually their carpus -- or wrist in comparative human anatomy. This makes for good kneeling when they reach under the fence to get to the extra tender, extra juicy plant that is just out of tongue's reach.

So, now you know more about Herman than you ever wanted to know.
